Vlicu's Karate was host of their 27th Annual Prairie Open Martial Arts Tournament in Weyburn.  With point sparring, many forms divisions and light kickboxing available, it was a day of high energy competition and great sportsmanship.


MARCH 1, 2009


The SMAA General & Executive meetings were held in Regina.  Thank-you to those who attended the meeting.  Many issues were discussed throughout the day.  The following are highlights of any discussion or changes in policies.


  1. BulletMartensville Karate & Complete Fitness were approved of probationary members.

  2. BulletMotion was passed to require an ambulance (not just medical personnel) to be present at all Full Contact events.  No bouts may take place if the ambulance is not present.

  3. BulletMotion was passed stating that any individual competing an a non-SMAA full contact event within Saskatchewan  will face disciplinary action and possible ejection from the SMAA.

  4. BulletMotion passed to allow athletes 17 years old to compete in the adult division (in Martial Arts tournaments - excluding any Full Contact events) if there are no other competitors in their regular division.

  5. BulletAny motions to be presented at either SMAA General or Executive meetings must be presented to the SMAA office, in writing (or email) a minimum of 2 weeks prior to the meeting.  These motions will then be distributed to SMAA members for contemplation prior to discussion at the meeting.  Any issues brought up at the meeting without being submitted 2 weeks prior to, will be discussions only and tabled until the next meeting for decision making.

  6. BulletThe SMAA will be purchasing a laptop computer and software to be used for office use.

  7. BulletTournament sanctioning fees will be increased by $100. 

  8. BulletThe increase in tournament sanctioning fee will be used to pay an official SMAA Record Keeper to compile tournament results at each tournament.  Tournament results will then be submitted to the SMAA office to be posted under the Provincial Ratings.  Tournament results will not longer be compiled or submitted by tournament promoters.

  9. BulletTournament promoters are now required to use the standardized Tournament Draw sheets.  Draw sheets are available for downloading and printing on the SMAA web site or available for purchase from the SMAA.



FEBRUARY 28, 2009


The Can-Am Classic Tournament was held in Balgonie.  Despite the change in venue, the tournament was host to over 200 competitors and a great show of Martial Arts.  Thank-you to Balgonie Martial Arts and Spirit of the Dragon Martial Arts for their annual tournament
